New Jerusalem is the Eternal Holy of Holies

Revelation 21:16 says about New Jerusalem, “The city lies square, and its length is as great as the breadth. And he measured the city with the reed to a length of twelve thousand stadia; the length and the breadth and the height of it are equal.”

The size of the city is twelve thousand stadia. Twelve in the Bible indicates eternal perfection. Thousand in the Bible indicates fullness or bountifulness. New Jerusalem is eternally perfect and bountiful, even unlimited, in the perfection of its characteristics.

New Jerusalem is a cube; its length, breadth, and height are equal. Only two other cubes are described in the Bible. These are the holy of holies (or holiest place) in the tabernacle (Exo. 26) and in the temple (1 Kings 6). The holy of holies in the tabernacle was not large; the dimensions doubled in the temple, and New Jerusalem is immensely greater. Our realization, appreciation, and experience of all that God is in Christ should have such an enlargement to New Jerusalem’s eternal fullness.

Both the tabernacle and the temple had the holy of holies, their innermost part, and a holy place, and an outer court. In Revelation 21–22 there is no outer court nor a holy place with New Jerusalem because we all have been brought fully into the holy of holies where God dwells.

Today we still need the experiences portrayed by the outer court and holy place; for example, the forgiveness of sins by Christ as the reality of the offerings on the bronze altar in the outer court. But in eternity all God’s operation will be completed and we all will be matured, so the holy of holies will be our constant dwelling place.

A Loud Voice out of the Throne, Behold the Tabernacle of God

Recent posts have been about Revelation 21:2. Verse 3 begins, “And I heard a loud voice out of the throne.” And connects what follows with the description of New Jerusalem in verse 2.

loud voice is often heard in Revelation, to call everyone’s attention to the concluding events of this age, the introduction of the coming age, the final judgments, and the new creation with New Jerusalem. In this verse the loud voice is out of the throne. This word comes direct from God and the Lamb who sit on the throne in New Jerusalem.

New JerusalemThis loud voice first says, “Behold, the tabernacle of God.” In Exodus the tabernacle was a physical building, a picture of the New Testament reality.

Hebrews 8:2 and 9:11 speak of the true and more perfect heavenly tabernacle. These verses tell us that the true tabernacle is not of the old creation. It is of the new creation.

This true tabernacle first appeared in the incarnation. John 1:14 declares, “The Word became flesh and tabernacled among us.” The incarnated Word, the man Jesus, was of the new creation as this true tabernacle among men. The New Testament tabernacle is God dwelling in a living Person!

This tabernacle was enlarged through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is God dwelling in a corporate living person, the church today and New Jerusalem in eternity.

This consummate tabernacle, New Jerusalem, is “with men” because it has “come down out of heaven” to be on earth for eternity.

Enlargement from Here to New Jerusalem

New JerusalemThis is the summary of posts about the enlargement of God’s house, the church today, to God’s city, New Jerusalem. A link, a key sentence and a verse are presented for each post.

 First Timothy 3:15 tells us “the house of God is the church of the living God.” This house will be enlarged to be the city of God, New Jerusalem.

 The word church in the New Testament refers to the Lord’s corporate people, His mystical Body. In Ephesians 1:22-23 Christ is “Head over all things to the church, which is His Body.”

The church as the manifestation of God in the flesh (1 Tim. 3:15-16) is a foretaste of God manifest through New Jerusalem.

 The common New Testament Greek word for house means both the dwelling place and the dwellers; in 1 Peter 2:5, “You yourselves also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house”—we are God’s dwelling place, His house.

 The convergence of house and household, dwelling place and dwellers, is the New Testament reality, both now in the church and eternally in New Jerusalem; in Ephesians 2:19 we are “members of the household of God.”

 The church as the house of God and New Jerusalem as the city of God are both living entities, the building together of God’s people; “you are the temple of God, and the Spirit of God dwells in you” (1 Cor. 3:16).

We are the living house of God; “Christ was faithful as a Son over His [God’s] house, whose house we are” (Heb. 3:6); in eternity we will be God’s city, New Jerusalem.

  New Jerusalem, a cube (Rev. 21:16), is the eternal holy of holies, where God meets with His people and speaks with us face to face; this is a great enlargement from the Old Testament holy of holies.

 The enlargement of God’s house is by Christ’s growth in us. Colossians 2:19 tells us that by our holding the Head, Christ, His Body, which is also the living house of God, “grows with the growth of God.”

 In Colossians 2:16–3:4 the growth is by our experiencing Christ as the reality, by holding Him as our Head, by our mind set on things of Christ, by being governed by Christ Himself, and by letting Christ our life live in us.

The growth is also seen in Ephesians 3:16-19; Christ makes home in our hearts as we experience His death and resurrection.

 Ephesians 3:17-19 continues; as a result of Christ’s home-making, we are rooted and grounded in love, we together apprehend His vastness, and we are filled unto all the fullness of God.

Then in Ephesians 3:20-21 the growth and filling in the prior verses result in glory to God in the church and then in more glory to him in New Jerusalem (Rev. 21:10-11), all enabled by God in Christ as the power operating in us.

The New Testament tabernacle is God dwelling in humanity, first in Jesus Christ (John 1:14) and then greatly enlarged in New Jerusalem (Rev. 21:3).

New Jerusalem is the Enlarged Tabernacle

New JerusalemWe are in a series of posts about the house of the living God, the church, being enlarged to the city of the living God, New Jerusalem.

The enlargement is by Christ growing in us. Recent posts are about this growth by Christ making His home in our hearts so that we can be filled to all the fullness of God resulting in glory to Him now in the church (Eph. 3:14-21) and ultimately in New Jerusalem.

This enlargement is also seen with the New Testament tabernacle—God dwelling in humanity. John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Then John 1:14 says, “the Word became flesh and tabernacled among us.” The Word, God, came to tabernacle* (to dwell, to live) in man!

Revelation 21:2 speaks of New Jerusalem. The next verse continues, “I heard a loud voice out of the throne, saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will tabernacle with them.” New Jerusalem is the eternal tabernacle of God.

At the beginning of the New Testament God tabernacled in the man Jesus. At the end of the New Testament God in Christ tabernacles in a corporate man composed of millions of His people. What a great enlargement from Jesus in John 1:14 to New Jerusalem in Revelation 21:3!

New Jerusalem: Christ’s Growth in Us (3)

New JerusalemNew Jerusalem is the enlargement of the house of the living God. This enlargement is God’s growth, His increase, in us (Col. 2:19). This growth is seen in Ephesians 3:14-19.

First we are strengthened into our inner man. Second, Christ makes His home in our hearts. Third, together we apprehend, we take hold of, the vastness of Christ and we know the knowledge-surpassing love of Christ. Fourth, we are filled unto all the fullness of God. This is our journey toward New Jerusalem.

These four steps result in glory to God in the church (Eph. 3:21), God’s New Testament people. This will result in greater glory to God in New Jerusalem.

None of the four steps in Ephesians 3:16-19 are possible in ourselves. Likewise glory to God in the church and in New Jerusalem is not possible in ourselves. But, the glory in Ephesians 3:21 is “to Him who is able to do superabundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power which operates in us” (v. 20)

We are not able, but God in Christ in us is able. What He will do is not merely a little beyond us, but “superabundantly above/immeasurably more than/exceeding abundantly above/infinitely more than* all that we ask or think.” This is possible because God in Christ is the power operating in us.

Our need is to cooperate, to give ourselves for the four steps in Ephesians 3:16-19, to ask the Lord to work all these matters in us. He is able, but He will not do it without our cooperation. Lord, make Your home in me, bring me on through all the steps in Ephesians 3. Gain the glory now and bring us onward to New Jerusalem.

New Jerusalem: Christ’s Growth in Us (2)

New Jerusalem is the enlargement of the house of the living God. This enlargement is God’s growth, His increase, in us (Col. 2:19). This growth is seen in Ephesians 3:14-19.

New JerusalemEphesians 3:16-17 are a prayer for our Father to strengthen us so that Christ may make His home in our hearts. This home-making is in the realm of faith. Likewise, everything related to New Jerusalem is in the realm of faith, in the spiritual realm.

Ephesians 3:17-19 continues. As a result of Christ’s home-making, we “being rooted and grounded in love, may be full of strength to apprehend with all the saints what the breadth and length and height and depth are and to know the knowledge-surpassing love of Christ, that you may be filled unto all the fullness of God.”

The strength in verse 18 is not our human strength; it comes out of Christ making home in us. This strength is Christ living in us. This enables us to apprehend together the vastness of Christ, a vastness which will be manifested to the fullest in New Jerusalem. Then we can know the excellent love of Christ.

The conclusion of Ephesians 3:16-19 is that all the believers together are “filled unto all the fullness of God.” This is a foretaste of New Jerusalem. God desires to fill His corporate people with all that He is in Christ, so that all He is may be manifested through His people. Ultimately New Jerusalem will be our corporate manifestation of all that God is.

New Jerusalem: Christ’s Growth in Us

New Jerusalem is the enlargement of God’s present operation in His people. This enlargement is God’s growth, His increase, in us (Col. 2:19). This growth is seen in Ephesians 3:16-19.

In verse 14 Paul began a prayer. In verse 16-17 he asks that the Father strengthen us into New Jerusalemour inner man so that Christ can make His home in our hearts. This home-making is the growth of God in us, which ultimately is for New Jerusalem.

But, what does it mean for Christ to make home in our hearts? The first three verses of a hymn begin with these lines:
__Deeper, deeper, in the cross of Jesus
__Higher, higher, in the life of Jesus
__Growing, growing, in us He is growing

The fourth verse says:
__Living, living, Christ is all our living, He’s so practical:
__Small things, big things, anything and all things—He’s involved in all.
The fifth verse continues:
__Person, Person, Jesus is our Person, Living now in us.
__He’s our tastes, our attitudes and actions; Oh, how glorious!
The sixth verse includes His bride, New Jerusalem (Rev. 21:2).

Certainly His growth in us is by our experience of His death and resurrection, as in the first three verses. Practically, this growth, Christ making home in our hearts, is “He’s our tastes, our attitudes and actions.” All our natural tastes, attitudes, preferences, opinions, desires, and likes and dislikes must be washed away and replaced by His tastes, His preferences, His likes and dislikes, etc. This is an aspect of our growth unto New Jerusalem.

We can pray with this hymn, As life in every way, Be our Person, Lord, each day.
Lord, grow in us toward New Jerusalem.

New Jerusalem, the Growth of God’s House

New Jerusalem

The church is the living house of the living God and is God manifested in the flesh (1 Tim. 3:15-16). New Jerusalem is the enlargement, the expansion of the church with God’s Old Testament people.

The prior post focused on Colossians 2:19—the church’s growth (increase) to New Jerusalem is by the growth (increase) of God—God in Christ spreading and increasing in us. In Colossians 2:16–3:4 this growth is by our experiencing Christ as the reality of every positive thing, by holding Him as our Head, by our mind being set on things of Christ above, by being governed by Christ Himself rather than by outward ordinances, and by letting Christ our life live in us.

All of these contributors to growth characterize New Jerusalem. In New Jerusalem we will be full grown with Christ as the reality of everything, we will be fully occupied with the things of Christ, we will be governed by God and the Lamb on the throne, and He will be our life and our living.

Lord, keep us with Yourself every day that You may grow in us unto New Jerusalem!

New Jerusalem: God’s House Grown in Life

New JerusalemThe holy of holies is where God meets with us. The Old Testament holy of holies was a physical picture, with an enlargement from the tabernacle to the temple. The New Testament holy of holies is the reality, the dwelling place of the living God, which is being enlarged to New Jerusalem.

This enlargement is accomplished by Christ’s growth in us. Colossians 2:19 tells us that by our holding the Head, Christ, a rich supply from Him flows so that “all the Body grows with the growth of God.”

God in Himself is perfect, complete; He does not grow. But in us He needs to grow, to spread, to occupy more of our inner being.

A note* on grows in this verse says, “Growing is a matter of life, which is God Himself. As the Body of Christ, the church should not be deprived of Christ, who is the embodiment of God as the source of life. By holding Christ, the church grows with the growth of God, with the increase of God as life.” Part of the note* on growth says, “the growth of the Body depends on the growth of God, the increase of God’s element, in the Body.”

Today the church is the living house of the living God. In the future New Jerusalem will be the living city of the living God. The growth of God in all His people is the increase of His house from the church today to New Jerusalem.

The key to this growth is our holding to Christ as our Head, as our life, and as the reality of all the Old Testament types and pictures (Col. 2:16-17). The more Christ our life increases in us, the closer we are to the fullness of New Jerusalem.

New Jerusalem: God’s House Enlarged

Revelation 21:16 tells us that when an angel measured New Jerusalem—”the length and the breadth and the height of it are equal.” New Jerusalem, as a cube, is the eternal holy of holies. This is a great enlargement from the Old Testament, where the dimension of the holy of holies was ten cubits in the tabernacle (Exo. 26) and twenty cubits in the temple (1 Kings 6:20).

New JerusalemThis principle of enlargement applies through the New Testament. Recent posts have many verses (including 1 Tim. 3:15; Heb. 3:6; 1 Peter 2:5) on the church as the house of the living God. This house is being enlarged to New Jerusalem, the city of the living God.

The holy of holies is where God meets with His people and speaks with us face to face (Ex. 25:22). Thus, in New Jerusalem, the eternal holy of holies, we have God’s eternal presence and His speaking.

God in Himself is unchanging. The enlarging of the holy of holies from the tabernacle to the temple to the church to New Jerusalem shows that God has more ground in His people. It also indicates that God’s people have more opportunity to be in His presence and more capacity to hear His speaking.

The enlargement of the holy of holies, which is the enlargement of our experience of God in it, results in the enlarged expression of God. The tabernacle and temple were pictures of the expression of God. The church as the house of God is the manifestation of God in the flesh. New Jerusalem will be the ultimate expression of God in redeemed, regenerated, transformed, and glorified humanity. This is New Jerusalem, having the glory of God (Rev. 21:11).

We are God’s Living House

New JerusalemHebrews 3 presents Moses as a type of Christ. Verse 6 tells us “Christ was faithful as a Son over His [God’s] house, whose house we are if indeed we hold fast the boldness and the boast of hope firm to the end.”

This verse tells us, the believers in Jesus Christ, that we are the house of God. God’s house today is a living composi-tion of all the believers. Likewise New Jerusalem will be a living composition of all God’s people throughout the ages.

Hebrews 3:6, like many other verses in recent posts, is a strong demonstration that the house of God is not a physical building. Yes, physical buildings are very useful for Christians to gather in, but they are not the house of God. Christians collectively are the house of God; combined with God’s Old Testament people, we will be New Jerusalem.

God is living. We match Him as the living house while we “hold fast the boldness and the boast of hope firm to the end.” Our boldness and boast is who Christ is, what He has accomplished, what He is doing now, and what He will manifest in the future.

To hold our boast and hope is to hold Christ as our Head (Col. 2:19). By holding Him a rich supply flows out to His Body. This supply causes the Body’s growth unto maturity. The maturity of God’s living house will bring forth God’s living city, New Jerusalem.

New Jerusalem: Not a Physical Building

The church as the house of God and New Jerusalem as the city of God are both living entities, the building together of God’s people.

Referring to the Old Testament temple in Jerusalem, Acts 7:47 says, ” Solomon built Him a house.” However, this physical house was only a picture. Acts 7:48-50 continues, “Yet the Most High does not dwell in that which is made by hands, even as the prophet says, ‘Heaven is My throne, and the earth is a footstool for My feetNew Jerusalem. What kind of house will you build for Me, says the Lord, or what is the place of My rest? Has not My hand made all these things?'”

The phrase “the Most High does not dwell in that which is made by hands” is a most clear word that God’s house and eventually New Jerusalem will not be something physical. The spiritual and non-physical nature of God’s house and city is also shown in 1 Corinthians 3:16, “you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you.”

Acts 7:49-50 quotes from Isaiah 66:1-2. After the quoted words, Isaiah continues, “But to this kind of man will I look, to him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, and who trembles at My word.” God is looking to men, especially to men whose seek Him in spirit. It is with these men that God is building His spiritual house, as in Ephesians 2:22 and 1 Peter 2:5.

Today we should be “burning in spirit, serving the Lord” (Rom. 12:11) and “full of faith and of the Holy Spirit (Acts 6:5). Our supply is “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit” (Phil. 4:23). God’s spiritual house today is built with such humans through our cooperation with the Lord. This house will become the spiritual city, New Jerusalem.
