Call on the Lord’s Name and Drink the Spirit

In my Bible reading, I came to 1 Corinthians 12. Verse 13 tells us, “in one Spirit we were all baptized into one Body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and were all given to drink one Spirit.” This drinking is frequent, as portrayed by our drinking of physical water.

This one Spirit which we drink is depicted by the river of water of life flowing from the throne in New Jerusalem. For eternity we will drink the Spirit.

Isaiah 12:3-5 says, “Therefore you will draw water with rejoicing from the springs of salvation, and you will say in that day, give thanks to Jehovah; call upon His name! Make His deeds known among the peoples….Sing psalms to Jehovah.” To draw this water is to drink. We can drink the Spirit by rejoicing, giving thanks, calling on the Lord’s name, declaring to others what the Lord has done, and singing to Him.

New JerusalemFirst Corinthians is written to the church in Corinth “with all those who call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ in every place.” Isaiah 12 ties the calling in chapter 1 to the drinking in chapter 12.

Calling on the name of the Lord began in Genesis 4 and continued through the Old Testament. Peter spoke about it in his first message in Acts 2. Saul identified Christians by their (obviously audible) calling (Acts 9:14).

In New Jerusalem we will drink the Spirit flowing from the throne and I believe that we will also be calling on the name of the Lord Jesus.

Where Does the River Flow Today?

In New Jerusalem there is “a river of water of life, bright as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb” (Rev. 22:1).

Where is this river today? The answer is in John 7. “Jesus stood and cried out, saying, If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes into Me, as the Scripture said, out of his innermost being shall flow rivers of living water. But this He said concerning the Spirit.”

New JerusalemThe river of New Jerusalem in Revelation is “of life” and this life is the eternal life of God. This is not a physical river but a spiritual river.

This river flows in everyone who comes to the Lord. To come is to drink. This drinking is spiritual: “we were all given to drink one Spirit” (1 Cor. 12:13).

How do we drink? The Lord invites us to come to Him. We can pray honestly and simply to Him, telling Him whatever is on our heart. First Peter 5:7 asks us to cast “all your anxiety on Him because it matters to Him concerning you.”

Isaiah 12:3, “Draw water with rejoicing from the springs of salvation.” When we praise the Lord, we are drinking. And Isaiah 55:1, 6, “Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters….Call upon Him while He is near.” The Lord is rich to all who call upon Him; this is another way to drink the river.

The river of New Jerusalem is the same flowing Spirit we drink today.

The Love of the Marriage of the Lamb Spoken to Ephesus in 1 Timothy 1

New JerusalemLast month there were six posts from Ephesians on the love between Christ the Husband and His wife the church (now) and New Jerusalem (eternally). My most recent post was the Lord’s rebuke to Ephesus in Revelation 2 because of their loss of the first love to Him.

How did they lose this love while remain-ing very active for the Lord in many things? First Timothy 1 gives us a view.

Paul exhorted Timothy to “remain in Ephesus in order that you might charge certain ones not to teach different things nor to give heed to myths and unending genealogies, which produce questionings rather than God’s economy, which is in faith”
(v. 3-4)

Then Paul says “the end/goal/purpose* of the charge is love out of a pure heart and out of a good conscience and out of unfeigned faith” (v. 5). These three inward sources of love make for a proper church life and prepare us for New Jerusalem.

The goal of Paul’s charge is love for the Lord out of a proper, upright inner being. The things which quench our love for the Lord and oppose this goal are different teachings, myths, genealogies, vain talking, and law teaching (v. 4-7). In contrast, 2 Timothy 2:22 exhorts us to pursue love “with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.”

Lord Jesus, I love You! Save me from all the distractions to remain in Your love.

Living Water Flows to, in New Jerusalem (4)

The “river of water of life” flowing from the throne in New Jerusalem (Rev. 22:1) is the eternal continuation of the living water the Lord Jesus promised in John’s gospel.

The Lord invites us to come to Him and drink this water. This coming is believing into Him (John 7:37-38). Lord, grant me faith to believe into You initially and to respond to You every day. Further, Isaiah tells us that rejoicing, thanking, and calling on His name are also ways to drink the living water.

New JerusalemIn John 7:39 the living water is the Spirit. This is also “the bountiful supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ” in Philippians 1:19. In this verse the bountiful supply of the Spirit comes to us not only through our own action (prior paragraph) but also through the prayers of other believers.

In Revelation 22:17 the Spirit and the bride cry out, “let him who is thirsty come; let him who wills take the water of life freely.” The invitation is to everyone, to whoever is thirsty and willing to come.

A song (words, music) begins with Revelation 22:1-2’s description of New Jerusalem:
__Drink! A river pure and clear that’s flowing from the throne;
__Eat! The tree of life with fruits abundant, richly grown.

The chorus is from Revelation 22:17:
__Do come, oh, do come,
__Says Spirit and the Bride:
__Do come, oh, do come,
__Let him that heareth, cry.
__Do come, oh, do come,
__Let him who thirsts and will
____Take freely the water of life!

The other verses of the song have words about Christ, our experiences of Him, and our oneness. Everything in this song is for today but will also be true in New Jerusalem.

Living Water Flows to, in New Jerusalem (3)

New JerusalemJesus went through death and entered into resurrection to release the flow of water of life, fulfilling His promises in John 4:14 and 7:37-39. This same water of life continues to flow as the river in New Jerusalem.

The release of living water in His death, seen in John 19, was foretold in Exodus 17. Moses was told to strike a rock so that water would come out for the people to drink as they travelled through the desert. First Corinthians 10:4 summarizes that experience, saying “all drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank of a spiritual rock which followed them, and the rock was Christ.”

Today, on our way to New Jerusalem, we are in a “desert.” The world around us is spiritually dry, without satisfaction to our inner thirst. The striking of the rock in Exodus 17, as a picture of the judgment of Christ on the cross, was once for all. Later, in Numbers 20, God told Moses to speak to the rock and it would release water to drink.

Today “the Rock is Christ” and we can “speak to the Rock.” Lord, I am thirsty, give me a drink of living water.

First Corinthians 12:13 says, “in one Spirit we were all baptized into one Body…and were all given to drink one Spirit.” How to drink? Isaiah 12:3: “you will draw water with rejoicing from the springs of salvation.” Isaiah 12:4 adds that, in that day, we will give thanks to the Lord and call on His name. To rejoice, give thanks, and call Lord Jesus are all ways to drink the living water. Practice now and expect to do more in New Jerusalem.

Purified for New Jerusalem by Cooperating with the Lord

The Lord Jesus early in the New Testament said, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God” (Matt. 5:8). The New Testament concludes with New Jerusalem, “the city was pure gold” (Rev. 21:18) and in it we “will  see His face” (22:4).

New JerusalemIn ourselves we are not pure* in heart; we need the Lord’s cleansing*! And we can receive His cleansing! He cleansed our hearts in response to our faith and He cleanses us from unrighteousness when we confess our sins. These are two steps toward the purity of New Jerusalem.

We also need an experiential purification of our being. This requires our cooperation with the Lord.

First John 3:3 says, “everyone who has this hope [His second coming, v. 3:2] set on Him purifies himself, even as He is pure.” Here to purify ourselves is to abide in Christ by the teaching of the anointing (v. 2:27) and to live Him as our righteousness (v. 2:29).

Our cooperation with the Lord in purifying ourselves is also seen in 2 Timothy 2. “Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from unrighteousness” (v. 19b). “If therefore anyone cleanses himself from these [vessels of dishonor, v. 20], he will be a vessel unto honor, sanctified, useful to the master, prepared unto every good work” (v. 21). “Flee youthful lusts, and pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart” (v. 22).

We can turn from the unrighteous things, respond to the inner anointing, and pursue Christian virtures by calling on the Lord with companions. Thus the Lord will purify us, gradually making our inward nature and condition match the pure gold of New Jerusalem.

*For the verses cited in this post, clean and pure both come from the same New Testament Greek noun and cleanses and purifies both come from the related Greek verb.

Shadows of New Jerusalem, Psalms 100-107

New JerusalemMany Psalms prophesy concerning Christ; they also speak about God’s house, city, and blessings to the whole earth, all of which are forerunners of New Jerusalem in the new creation.

Psalm 100:1-2, “Make a joyful noise to Jehovah, all the earth. Serve Jehovah with rejoicing; come before His presence with joyful singing.” Today we serve with rejoicing, joyful singing, and praising the Lord. In the new creation, all the earth will make a joyful noise.

Psalm 102:21-22, “The name of Jehovah may be declared in Zion, and His praise, in Jerusalem, when the peoples are gathered together, and the kingdoms, to serve Jehovah.” We declare and call upon the name today (Rom. 10:12-13). The eternal fulfillment of verse 22 is “they will bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it [New Jerusalem]” (Rev. 21:26).

Psalm 106:1, “Hallelujah. Give thanks to Jehovah, for He is good, for His lovingkindness is forever.” “Forever” points clearly toward the new creation and New Jerusalem.
Psalm 106:48, “Blessed be Jehovah the God of Israel, from eternity to eternity. And let all the people say, Amen. Hallelujah.” Today should be and New Jerusalem will be full of praising, blessing, and thanksgiving.

Psalm 107, 2-3a, 7, “Let the redeemed of Jehovah say so, whom He redeemed from the hand of the adversary, and gathered out of the lands….And He led them on a straight way that they might come to a city of habitation.” Today we have “the redemption which is in Christ Jesus” (Rom. 3:24) and are on “the straight way” (2 Peter 2:15) to New Jerusalem, our city of habitation.

Baptized in One Spirit into One Body           and into New Jerusalem

All believers in Jesus Christ, although very numerous, “are one Body in Christ” (Rom. 12:5). To be “one Body in Christ” is not by our doing. Rather, 1 Corinthians 1:29-30 assures us, “of God you are in Christ Jesus.” In the same way, it is of God that we are in New Jerusalem and are one organic city in Christ.

New JerusalemHow did God put us into Christ so that we could be one Body in Him? First Corinthians 12:13 tells us, “in one Spirit we were all baptized into one Body.”

This Body is the present reality of New Jerusalem. The oneness of the Body of Christ and the oneness of the new man (Eph. 2:15, Col. 3:10-11) both point toward the oneness of New Jerusalem.

How do we partake of this oneness? “In one Spirit we were all baptized into one Body…and were all given to drink one Spirit.” Isaiah 12:3-4: “You will draw water with rejoicing from the springs of salvation, and you will say in that day, Give thanks to Jehovah; call upon His name!”

These verses tell us that spiritual drinking is calling on the name of the Lord. Calling O Lord Jesus brings us into the practicality of the oneness as our foretaste of New Jerusalem. We can also cry out O Lord Jesus, we love You!

Surely New Jerusalem will be full of rejoicing, thanksgiving, calling, and loving the Lord.

Drinking by Calling on the Lord at Holding to Truth.

Pursue now, unto New Jerusalem (2)

Our present New Testament pursuing includes peace, love, sanctification, and building up (verses in prior post). All of these point toward New Jerusalem.

New JerusalemAdditionally, 2 Timothy 2:22 entreats us to “flee youthful lusts, and pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.” Our pursuing of righteousness is our pursuing of Christ because God has made Him righteousness to us (1 Cor. 1:30).

“We are expecting new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells” (2 Peter 3:13). Not only New Jerusalem, but also the entire new universe will be characterized by righteousness. Furthermore, Psalm 89:14 says, “Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne.” Ultimately the throne is in New Jerusalem from which the living water flows for eternity (Rev. 22:1).

We also pursue faith. This faith is our conviction of things not seen, including New Jerusalem, the city with foundations toward which Abraham looked (Heb. 11:1, 10, 16). We pursue peace too, which comes from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ (start of Rom., 1&2 Cor., Gal., Eph., Phil) and is called “the peace of Christ” in Colossians 3:15. Additionally we pursue love, the love which is of God (Rom. 5:5) and is God Himself (1 John 4:16).

All our pursuing (and our fleeing also) is “with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.” To call on the Lord is to cry out to Him. This is an audible calling, as in Acts 7:59, and 9:14, 21. Here is much more on the Biblical history of calling on the name of the Lord. Given this long history, it is likely that even in New Jerusalem we will call on the name of the Lord Jesus.

Lord, bring me into the practice of 2 Timothy 2:22. Give me calling companions with whom I can call on You and pursue You as my righteousness, faith, love, and peace.

God Operates and We Cooperate

New JerusalemThe city New Jerusalem is the bride, the wife of the Lamb (Revelation 21:2, 9-10). The Bible affirms both that God prepared the city (Hebrews 11:16) and that the bride made herself ready (Revelation 19:7).

God has prepared! Thank Him! Now we must get ourselves ready. However, in ourselves, we cannot get ourselves ready. We get ready by cooperating with God’s operation in us.

Here are two examples of God’s operation and our cooperation:
• Philippians 2:12-13 exhorts us “even as you have always obeyed…work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who operates in you both the willing and the working for His good pleasure.” Because God is operating in us, we can work out our salvation by obeying His operation in us. • Romans 10:12-13 promises, “the same Lord is Lord of all and rich to all who call upon Him; for ‘whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’” There is no doubt that the Lord is rich in Himself, but these riches are imparted only to those who will call upon His name. (read more)

We are those engaged to Christ, to become New Jerusalem as the bride of Christ, and we should maintain our simplicity and purity toward Christ (2 Corinthians 11:2-3). This simplicity is well expressed in a song which begins
__Simply loving everyday;
____Loving through a stormy way,
__Even when my faith is small,
____Loving Jesus, that is all.

May we be those who love the Lord Jesus Christ every day from now until New Jerusalem appears.

Pursue with Those Who Call on the Lord   Out of a Pure Heart

New Jerusalem is revealed in Revelation 21–22 as a bride prepared for her Husband. This preparation involves many things including God’s sending of John the Baptist, God coming in the man Jesus, His offering of Himself to death in the body prepared by God, and God preparing us as vessels of mercy. On our side, the preparation includes our repentance and confession of sins, the exercise of our spirit to receive the deep things God prepared for us, and our holding the living word of God in faith.

New JerusalemOur cooperation with God’s preparation is also seen in 2 Timothy 2:21-22, “If therefore anyone cleanses himself from these, he will be a vessel unto honor, sanctified, useful to the master, prepared unto every good work. But flee youthful lusts, and pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.”

In these verses:
• We cleanse ourselves (by opening to the Lord and His word, not by our own effort) from things of dishonor, not passively waiting for the Lord to cleanse us.
• We flee youthful lusts (even if we are not young).
• We pursue spiritual virtues with others who have the same pursuing and who call on the name of the Lord (Romans 10:12-13).

Our heart is a key to our preparation. Lord, work in me to purify my heart, and purify the hearts of those with whom I pursue and call. This is a part of our journey to New Jerusalem.

With this preparation, we can be vessels unto honor, prepared unto every good work. These are the good works which God prepared for us to walk in (Ephesians 2:10). This is much higher than what is “good works” in the human realm. The highest good work is to minister Christ as life to other people for them to receive eternal salvation and for them to be knit together in the Body of Christ consummating in New Jerusalem.

Redeemed to be Married to a Rich Man

New JerusalemIn Revelation 21:2 John says, “I saw the holy city, New Jerusalem…prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.” In 21:9 New Jerusalem is identified as the wife of the Lamb, Jesus Christ. Many couples in the Bible foreshadow this eternal marriage.

In recent reading I was pointed toward Boaz and Ruth as a picture of the eternal marriage. Boaz was “a man of great wealth” (Ruth 2:1). He is a picture of Jesus Christ, who is so rich to us:
• …the same Lord is Lord of all and rich to all who call upon Him (Romans 10:12)
• To me…was this grace given to announce to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ as the gospel (Ephesians 3:8)
• To whom God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory (Colossians 1:27)

Ruth was a Gentile, not part of Israel. She was also a widow and a poor person. As sinners we were alienated from Israel (Ephesians 2:12), poor, and without a husband. Nevertheless, Boaz redeemed her, as recorded in Ruth 4:1-9. Boaz is a picture of Christ, who redeemed us no matter what our natural heritage and status were.

Boaz did not stop with redemption. He took Ruth as his wife (Ruth 4:10). Likewise Jesus Christ did not stop with redeeming us. He took us all as His corporate wife, the church, ultimately to be New Jerusalem.

Boaz and Ruth became ancestors of Jesus, who declared God and expressed the glory of God (John 1:14, 18). Similarly, in the eternal marriage of the Lamb, New Jerusalem “has the glory of God” (Revelation 21:11).
