The Living Gold of New Jerusalem

New Jerusalem is a living city, constituted with the Triune God and all God’s people. The gold in New Jerusalem is part of this living composition—it is the divine nature.

Revelation 21:18b says,

“the city was pure gold, like clear glass.”

The main element of the city is the divine nature. This is the ultimate development of what we see in the beginning of Revelation: the seven golden lampstands (1:12) are the seven churches (1:20).

New JerusalemThe churches, and New Jerusalem, are golden not because of what we are nor what we can do. They are golden because each member has received God in Christ Jesus. This is 1 John 4:15, “Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides/lives/dwells* in him and he in God.” Hence, we may be “partakers of the divine nature” (2 Peter 1:4).

Today, to strengthen our abiding in the divine nature, we have both the Lord’s words (John 14:23, 15:7) and the Spirit’s anointing (1 John 2:27). God’s goal is not our doing but our abiding in Him. We apparently can do things for Him without abiding, but in His eyes those actions do not count; this is John 15:5, “apart from Me you can do nothing.”

If we abide in Him, our actions will come out of His abiding in us and hence will express God. Today we need to overcome all hindrances to exercise ourselves to love Him, take His word as our life supply, and be sensitive to the Spirit’s anointing. In New Jerusalem, when sin and death have been abolished, we will still love Him, abide in Him and express Him yet without hindrances. O Lord, move me to exercise now!

* Various translations used here, thanks to All these words express a living relationship, not a lifeless, static relationship.
