New Jerusalem is a Living City

New JerusalemNew Jerusalem is a city composed of living persons—the Triune God and all God’s people. It is not constituted with physical materials. Consider:

New Jerusalem is the Bride of the Lamb

John saw New Jerusalem prepared as a bride, the wife of the Lamb (Revelation 21:2, 9-10). The Husband is a living Person and the wife is a corporate living person to match Him.

God and the Lamb are the Temple

Revelation 21:22  declares that “the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.” The temple of New Jerusalem is not a physical place but God Himself in the redeeming Lamb. We worship God in God.

God is Building His People in Christ

Throughout the New Testament, God is building His people together in Jesus Christ (an overview with verses). New Jerusalem is the consummation of this New Testament building work and maintains the same structure—God’s people built together in Christ.

The City is the Mutual Abode of God and His People

In His earthly ministry Jesus spoke to us, “abide in Me and I in you” (John 15:4). Later, many verses in the epistles are about us in Christ and Christ in us (e.g. Romans 8:1-2, Colossians 1:27). This is a mutual abode, a coinherence. New Jerusalem is the ultimate realization of this mutual abiding.

  1. You agree that Jesus is a human person but on the other hand you are speaking of a Triune God. How can somebody be one in three by which one is an eternal Spirit and as such can not die, whilst the other proved to his disciples he was not a spirit but a man of flesh and blood who gave his life for others?

    • Jesus is both God and man. He was begotten of the Holy Spirit, the source of His divinity, and born of Mary, the source of His humanity. He definitely died in His humanity but of course His divine part could not and did not die.
