We Are The Temple of The Living God

New JerusalemGod’s New Testament building is composed of His New Testament people built/held/knit/fitted/joined1 together in Christ and by Christ as our life. In 2 Corinthians 6:16 Paul declares,

For we are the temple of the living God, even as God said, “I will dwell among them and walk among them; and I will be their God, and they will be My people.”

We are the living temple 2 of the living God! This is God’s doing through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We should rejoice and thank Him. The majority of verse 6:16 describes what it means to be this living temple. Kenneth Wuest’s The New Testament, An Expanded Translation3 is enlightening:

For, as for us, we are an inner sanctuary of the living God, even as God said, I will dwell in them in fellowship with them as in a home and I will live my life in and through them. And I will be their God and they themselves will be my people.

In fact we are God’s temple by our receiving Jesus Christ. In reality (or experience) we are God’s temple when He is at home in us and lives through us. We need to cooperate with Him by taking care of our living. This is the reason for Paul’s warnings in 2 Corinthians 6:14—7:1, which we should read. Here we mention the positive side of these warnings.

• Be yoked with believers, especially with those who openly confess their faith in Jesus.
• Be partners with believers who apply Christ as their righteousness.
• Have fellowship with those whose living testifies that they walk in the light.
• Say Yes to the Lord and No to the devil.
• Share with believers and preach the gospel to unbelievers.
• Love God, not the world with all its attractions.
• Ask God for mercy to be separated to Him daily from everything unclean.
• Cleanse ourselves by confessing our sins and asking our Lord for His cleansing.

To the extent we practice this positive Christian living, both alone and with other believers, we will participate in God’s New Testament building work. We will also experience the reality of the temple of the living God.

2 Two Greek words are translated temple. The one used here refers solely to the principal building, the holy place and holy of holies. (The other refers to this building plus the bronze altar, laver, and surrounding courtyards, porches, and secondary buildings.)
