Shine…Holding Forth the Word of Life

New JerusalemZachariah, in his prophecy in Luke 1:67-80, said “the rising sun will visit us from on high, to shine upon those sitting in darkness and in the shadow of death” (v. 78-79). This was fulfilled when Jesus began His ministry (Matthew 4:12-17). Verse 16 tells us, “The people sitting in darkness have seen a great light; and to those sitting in the region and shadow of death, to them light has risen.”

John’s gospel tells us that this light springs out of the eternal life. “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men” (v. 1:4). “I am the light of the world; he who follows Me shall by no means walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life” (v. 8:12).

This light of life is contrary to darkness and death. Our gospel message is to turn people “from darkness to light and from the authority of Satan to God” (Acts 26:18). Verse 23 continues, “the Christ…being the first to rise from the dead, would announce light both to the people and to the Gentiles.”

The Lord ascended before announcing light to the Gentiles and before the announcing to some part of the Jews. Hence, His announcing is what He announces through us. This announcing is also His shining through us, as in Philippians 2:15-16, “…you shine as luminaries in the world, holding forth the word of life.” When the Lord’s word becomes alive to us, we can present it to others in a shining manner. Lord, fill me with Your word of life and shine through me.

His shining will increase until there is no death (Revelation 20:14) and the fullest shining of God in Christ within and through the New Jerusalem. Revelation 21:23 declares, “the city has no need of the sun or of the moon that they should shine in it, for the glory of God illumined it, and its lamp is the Lamb.”
