God’s Slaves Serve in New Jerusalem

serve God in New JerusalemRevelation 22:3 describes New Jerusalem saying, “The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and His slaves will serve Him.” I had posts last month (see below) about the throne and slaves. Now we consider our serving.

This verse says, “His slaves will serve Him.” In the New Testament there are three Greek words often translated “serve.” The word here is latreuō (λατρεύω). This is not the word that means “serve as a slave” but rather “serve as a priest.” We are both slaves and priests of the Triune God.

Our grasp of the word “serve [as a priest]” is strengthened by seeing it in other verses.
• Jesus answered, “you shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve.” (Luke 4:8) Here we see that this type of priestly service is only to be toward God.
• God said “after these things they will come forth and serve Me in this place.” (Acts 7:7)
• Paul said, “I serve the God of our fathers.” (Acts 24:14)
• “How much more will the blood of Christ…purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”
In the last three verses God Himself is the object of our service. We are not merely doing things “for God” but we are “serving God.”

Slaves serve as priests because of what Jesus Christ has done. On one hand, according to Revelation 5:9 He purchased us for God by His blood. A slave is one who is bought with a price (1 Corinthians 7:23). On the other hand He “released us from our sins by His blood and made us a kingdom, priests to His God and Father” (Revelation 1:5-6). Since Christ has already purchased us and already made us priests, we serve the living God now and will continue our serving into New Jerusalem.
