We Serve in Love

Serve God in loveRevelation 22:3 describes New Jerusalem with the words “The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and His slaves will serve Him.” On one hand, “Christ has set us free” (Galatians 5:1) and on the other hand we are His slaves (see related post below).

Galatians 5:13 says, “For you were called for freedom, brothers; only do not turn this freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.” The Greek word for “serve” means to serve as a slave. This one verse has both freedom and slaves, with serving as slaves tied to love.

Many Bible teachers have pointed out that the slave in Exodus 21:1-6 is a type of the Lord Jesus. According to 21:2, a Hebrew slave was to be set free after serving his master six years. If he obtained a wife and children during his years as a slave, he was to leave them as the property of his master and “go out by himself” (v. 4). However, the slave might “plainly say, I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free” (v. 5). Here we see that continuing as a slave is not a legal requirement; it is a matter of love. Because the slave loved his master, his wife, and his children, he did not want to go out free. Instead, he would serve his master forever. Love is the basis of his continued service.

The Lord Jesus loves God, the church, and all His people. God is His Master, the church is His wife, and all His people are His children. The New Testament reveals this threefold love of the Lord Jesus for the Father (John 14:31), the church (Ephesians 5:25), and all the believers, all the saints (Galatians 2:20). Motivated by such a love, He was willing to be a slave. Love is the motive and the prerequisite of being a slave.*

This love in Jesus Christ motivated Him to serve as a slave. Now, because of His love, we also love (1 John 4:19), so we also can serve as slaves. As His love possesses us more, we serve more. Lord, cause Your love in us to increase day by day from now to the New Jerusalem!

  2. It is one thing to serve out of constraint or because you’re forced to, and it is something else to serve because you LOVE! This is why our consecration is maintained by loving the Lord, and our service to the Lord should be because we love Him!

Oh, may we never lose our first love for the Lord!
