New Jerusalem: Our Inheritance

New Jerusalem is our living hope, our inheritanceFirst Peter 1:3-4 says, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has regenerated us unto a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, unto an inheritance, incorruptible and undefiled and unfading, kept in the heavens for you.” We have been regenerated, born again, born of God to become children of God having God’s life (John 1:12-13). Now we have a living hope, a hope founded in Christ who is our life. This living hope is also our inheritance.

Our inheritance is a consequence of our regeneration and is a hope established in and by eternal life. Hence, this inheritance is not physical but spiritual.

We receive our inheritance in three stages – during this age, in the millennial kingdom, and in eternity. In this age the spreading of eternal life in us produces many results, such as renewing (Titus 3:5) and transformation (2 Corinthians 3:18). In the coming age we will inherit much more, including entering into the joy of our Master (Matthew 21:23, 25) and reigning with Him (Revelation 20:4). Our inheritance in eternity will include the blessings in Revelation 22:3-5.

New Jerusalem is part of our inheritance. All that we experience of the living hope in this age and the next will carry forward and culminate in New Jerusalem. Like everything of eternal life, New Jerusalem is part of the new creation in Christ. The city is incorruptible in nature, and undefiled by the sin and death of the old creation, and unfading because it springs out of Christ’s death-overcoming resurrection and is eternal.

  2. we tend to forget about our consummation and our inheritance as we get busy with the things of this world or with our own problems, but it’s good to be reminded of how much more there’s ahead of us and in eternity! We will inherit so much! There will be a consummation!

    • While we are waiting for the consummate inheritance, we should be open and eager to inherit more life day by day (e.g. 2 Cor 4:16 and Rom. 8:11).
