Fruit Each Month

The tree of life bears fruit each monthAnd he showed me a river of water of life, bright as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb in the middle of its street. And on this side and on that side of the river was the tree of life, producing twelve fruits, yielding its fruit each month.” (Revelation 22:1-2a)

The mention of “each month” indicates that the moon will be present in the new heavens. Since the moon shines by reflection of the sun’s light, the sun will be present also.

Revelation 21:23 says, “And the city has no need of the sun or of the moon that they should shine in it, for the glory of God illumined it, and its lamp is the Lamb.” Although the sun and the moon are present in the new heavens, their light is not needed in New Jerusalem because the glory of God in the Lamb-lamp enlightens the city.

Paul, recounting the Lord’s appearing to him in Acts 9 told us that he saw “a light from heaven beyond the brightness of the sun” (Acts 26:13). This light was the Lord Jesus (v. 26:15). Since the unattenuated brightness of God in Christ Jesus exceeds that of the sun, in New Jerusalem there is “no need of the sun or of the moon.” We have a spiritual foretaste of this New Jerusalem light today when we “walk in the light as He is in the light” (1 John 1:7).

  1. Praise the Lord that we can have a foretaste of the light in the New Jerusalem when we walk in the light as Christ is in the light. “Lord, keep us in Your light through all our days so that we may become people living in the reality of this holy city today.”

It’s interesting that there will be “months” in eternity future. That is certainly a mystery. I think it would be interesting to maybe explore time/eternity in the New Jerusalem a bit further.
