New Creation

In Revelation 21:1 John says, “And I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and the sea is no more.” This new creation has New Jerusalem as its center.

New Heavens and New EarthSeveral verses speak about the change from the old creation to the new:
• Hebrews 1:10-12: “You in the beginning, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the works of Your hands; they will perish, but You remain perpetually; and they all will become old like a garment, and like a mantle You will roll them up; like a garment they will also be changed; but You are the same, and Your years will not fail.”
• Second Peter 3:10: “The day of the Lord will come as a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the elements, burning with intense heat, will be dissolved, and the earth and the works in it will be burned up.”
• Revelation 20:11: “And I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose face earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them.”

Note 7* on 2 Peter 3:10 says, “Compare dissolved and burned up with roll them up and changed in Heb. 1:12, fled away and no place was found for them in Rev. 20:11, and passed away in Rev. 21:1. The burning with intense heat to dissolve the heavens and the earth is the procedure God will use to roll up the heavens and the earth and put them away that they may be changed from the old to the new (2 Pet. 3:13; Rev. 21:1). This will be God’s final and consummate dealing with His creation in His government.”

Our focus is not on the outward change from the old creation to the new, but on Christ. We are not waiting, we are already a new creation in Him (2 Corinthians 5:17) on the path to New Jerusalem.
