Righteousness and Peace

New Jerusalem is on the new earth and under the new heaven (Revelation 21:1-2). In this new creation, “righteousness dwells” (2 Peter 3:13). Because of the prevalence of righteousness, peace (the fruit of righteousness) also fills the new creation.

Christ as righteousness brings us peaceRighteousness and peace are always together. The source of turmoil in our society and in the whole world is the unrighteousness of fallen mankind. Whether we tend to be good or bad in behavior, without Christ we are unrighteous. But, “Christ also has suffered once for sins, the Righteous on behalf of the unrighteous, that He might bring you to God” (1 Peter 3:18). When we believe in Christ, we are brought to God and God applies to us what Christ has accomplished. Because of His death, we can be justified, forgiven, and cleansed from our unrighteousness, and Christ became our righteousness (1 Corinthians 1:30).

The result for us is, “having been justified out of faith, we have peace toward God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1). Our peace toward God is a result of our being justified (made righteous*). Christ as our righteousness and peace puts us on the road to the much fuller righteousness and peace that will fill New Jerusalem and the entire the new creation.

* Although the English words justify and righteous look very different, they are used in English New Testaments to translate closely related Greek words.

  1. Amen. Today there’s NO peace (no matter how much man tries to have UN, NATO, etc) because there’s NO justice, no righteousness. But in the New Jerusalem, in the new heaven and new earth, righteousness dwells, so we enjoy peace!

Lord, You are our righteousness! Lord, work Yourself into us as righteousness. Lord, stitch by stitch, we want to cooperate with You that we may have that garment, the righteousnesses!

    • Right. Today man’s striving (e.g. police, courts, jails) serves only to imperfectly restrict unrighteousness. The real answer is Christ coming into us and working in us. “He Himself is our peace.”
