New Jerusalem: No Night There (3)

New Jerusalem has no nightRevelation 21:25 speaks concerning New Jerusalem, “there will be no night there.” In New Jerusalem all of God’s people will be full of light and will not experience night or darkness.

Our path to this marvelous condition began in the first coming of Jesus Christ. In Matthew 4 Jesus came to dwell in Capernaum (v. 13) to fulfill Isaiah’s prophecy, “The people sitting in darkness have seen a great light; and to those sitting in the region and shadow of death, to them light has risen.’” (v. 16) The great light was not physical but was Jesus Himself, dwelling with them.

At the time recorded in Matthew Jesus could dwell with people but not in them. After His death and resurrection He was able to dwell in people, to dispel their inward darkness and become their light of life. On the road to Damascus the resurrected Lord charged Paul to go “To open their eyes, to turn them from darkness to light and from the authority of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been sanctified by faith in Me.” (Acts 26:18) Lord, daily grant us more turning from darkness to light.

The declaration of Acts 26 is not in the physical realm. Darkness equals the authority of Satan and light equals the kingdom of God. The transfer from darkness to light is with forgiveness of sins (cleansing us of what is of darkness) and with an inheritance (bringing us the divine riches of light). The culmination of the transfer with forgiveness and inheritance is New Jerusalem. In New Jerusalem will be no night, no darkness, no sin, and no authority of Satan. The city will be full of light, full of God’s reign, and full of God as our inheritance.
