Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!

My prior post spoke about the secret and open aspects of the second coming of the Lord Jesus, an event which will end this age. Revelation 22:20 says,

Yes, I come quickly. Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!

This verse is the third time in Revelation 22 that the Lord declares, “I come quickly” (v. 7, 12, 20). May we echo the response of this verse, “Amen. Come Lord Jesus.”

Come, Lord JesusOne side of our Christian life is to know what the Bible teaches about the Lord’s second coming. The other side of our Christian life is to lovingly expect His imminent return. We need both sides*.

According to the first side, we may properly say that His coming is some years away because certain conditions (e.g. the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem) have not yet been fulfilled. The other side motivates us always “to live to Him” (2 Corinthians 5:15) that we may be “well pleasing to Him” (v. 9). The second side saves us from an imprudent living based on the thought that He delays (Matthew 24:45-51). Lord, motivate us to lovingly expect Your return at any moment.

* Due to the infinite wisdom and unsearchable richness of God, we must accept from Him what, to us mortals, may seem contradictory. More on this is in the booklet “The Twofoldness of Divine Truth,” by R. Govett. My copy is undated, from Christian Publications Inc., Harrisburg PA.
