Jesus Said, I am Coming (1)

second coming of ChristThe second coming of the Lord Jesus at the end of this age is one of the central beliefs of Christians. His coming is a huge landmark between now and New Jerusalem.

The Lord’s second coming will begin secretly, for those who are prepared for Him (e.g. Matthew 24:42-44). Here the Lord speaks of Himself coming as a thief comes, in a hidden way rather than openly. First Thessalonians 5:2 says the same: “For you yourselves know perfectly well that like a thief in the night, so the day of the Lord comes.” Shortly thereafter the second coming will be manifested openly. The Lord told the Jewish leaders in Matthew 26:64  “You will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.” This aspect of His coming will be visible to all: “For just as lightning flashing from one end of heaven shines to the other end of heaven, so will the Son of Man be in His day” (Luke 17:24). Revelation 1:7, based on Zechariah 12:10, highlights the twelve tribes of Israel in the open aspect of the Lord’s coming, “Behold, He comes with the clouds, and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him; and all the tribes of the land will mourn over Him. Yes, amen.”

The key for us is to “watch” and be “faithful” (Matthew 24:42, 45) and to be filled with love for His appearing (2 Timothy 4:8). Then none of us will not be an evil slave who says, “my master delays” (Matthew 24:48). Lord, fill us with love for You and Your appearing that we may remain watchful and faithful, eager for Your return.
