The Seven Spirits for New Jerusalem

Seven Spirits for New JerusalemIn Revelation 1:4-5 we are blessed with “Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is coming, and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful Witness, the Firstborn of the dead, and the Ruler of the kings of the earth.”  The seven Spirits are here and in Revelation 3:1, 4:5, and 5:6. The Spirit (singular) is in Revelation 2:7, six more verses in chapters 2 and 3, 14:13, and 22:17. In the context of 1:4-5, the seven Spirits are clearly part of the Triune God.

The use of both singular and seven in Revelation tells us that the Spirit is one in essence but is sevenfold in intensity. A comment on “from the seven Spirits” in Vincent’s Word Studies* says, “from the sevenfold Spirit, which indeed is simple in nature, sevenfold in grace.” Revelation 4:5b says, “And there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.” Here the Spirit is burning and shining sevenfold in intensity. In verse 5:6 the seven eyes of the Lamb “are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.” This is sevenfold searching and looking.

The number seven speaks of God’s operation through time. God’s operation includes His growing in us, His care for Israel, and His judgements on the nations. While the second and third aspects of His operation are of interest, the first calls for our cooperation. We can pray, Lord, grant me what I need to cooperate sevenfold with Your grace, burning, enlightening, and searching. Lord, prepare me thoroughly for New Jerusalem.

  1. Are you trying to see more about the New Jerusalem, making new applications, or just digesting and repeating prior speaking?

  2. A year ago some brothers in Southern California commented that there was little truth about New Jerusalem on the internet. At that time I had some sense to take action, but I delayed two months until Tom (holdingtotruth.com) encouraged me. Since then I have been blogging, following the Lord’s leading on the topics. The only reference I use is the New Testament Recovery Version with footnotes except for rare cases where I cite another book. My goal is to present spiritual truths but in so doing I have seen and appreciated more than before.
