The Wall Expresses God

Revelation 21:18a, speaking about New Jerusalem says, “the building work of its wall was jasper.” Revelation 4:2 speaks of the One sitting on the throne in heaven and verse 3 tells us that “He who was sitting was like a jasper stone and a sardius in appearance.” The wall is built with jasper, so it has the same appearance as the One on the throne. The wall not only keeps common things out of New Jerusalem but even more it expresses the Triune God.

In Revelation 21:11 John told us that he saw New Jerusalem “having the glory of God. Her light was like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone, as clear as crystal.” The appearance of the wall matches the whole city because the wall and the city are one living entity, not separate physical structures. They have grown up together. They have the same appearance —the appearance of the Triune God who is the reality of the city and its wall. The city and the wall shine with the glory of God.
