Regeneration and New Jerusalem (1)

New Jerusalem is spiritual rather than physical and it is a city of life. Revelation 22:1-2 speak of “a river of water of life, bright as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb” and “the tree of life, producing twelve fruits, yielding its fruit each month.” The life of the river and of the tree is the divine life, the eternal life, the life which is Christ Himself, freely available now to all men willing to receive Him. If you have never received Him, you can tell Him now, Lord, I receive You today. Cleanse me and come into me as life. Live in me and manifest Your life to me and through me.

Our beginning in this eternal life is to be born again, to be regenerated. John 1:12-13 puts together receiving Jesus Christ, believing into His name, and being born of God. These verses say, “as many as received Him, to them He gave the authority to become children of God, to those who believe into His name, who were begotten…of God.” In John 3 we find being born anew (born again, born from above) in verses 3, 5, 6 and receiving eternal life by believing in verses 15-16, 36.

After being born again, we grow in this life. First Peter 2:2, making use of the illustration of human birth and growth, tells us, “As newborn babes, long for the guileless milk of the word in order that by it you may grow unto salvation.” The word of God, the Bible, is the life supply for our growth. Every time we come to the pages of the Bible we also come to the Lord by turning our heart to Him and speaking a short prayer asking Him to feed us with His word. Through this we will “grow unto salvation” and grow into New Jerusalem.
