Three Categories of People on New Earth

In Revelation 21:1-2a the apostle John tells us, “And I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and the sea is no more. And I saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God.” New Jerusalem has come down “out of heaven” and is on the new earth. On new earth are three categories of people.

The first are those who have an intimate and mature relationship with the Triune God. These are from both Old Testament and New Testament times, as indicated by the names of the twelve tribes (v. 21:12) and the twelve apostles (v. 21:14). Some New Testament descriptions are that these people are full-grown in Christ (Colossians 1:28), sanctified wholly and preserved complete (1 Thessalonians 5:23), and have cooperated with the development of the eternal life in them to receive a rich and bountiful entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (2 Peter 1:5-11). These are the constituents of New Jerusalem, coinhering with the Triune God who is the essence of New Jerusalem

The second category is the peoples, the nations, on new earth around New Jerusalem (Revelation 21:3-4, 24-26). These peoples (plural), nations (plural), are not “in Christ” because in Christ there are no national, racial, or social distinctions (Galatians 3:28; Colossians 3:10-11). These peoples are those welcomed into the kingdom when the Lord sits on His throne in Matthew 25:31-46 (see notes on v. 34, and note 1 on Rev. 21:24).

The third category is evil people (Revelation 21:8) who will follow the beast and the false prophet into the lake of fire (Revelation 19:20).

Lord, reveal Yourself in me and attract me to live one with You (Galatians 1:16; 2:20).
