Christ as the Reality of the Tree of Life Supplies Life for our Living

In Revelation 22:1-2the tree of life” is found “on this side and on that side of the river.” This tree is Christ Himself. As the true vine (John 15:1) and as our life (Colossians 3:4), Christ is the reality of the tree of life.

The Lord said, “I am the life” (John 14:6) and also, “I am the bread of life” (6:35). He is both our life and our life supply. The two go together. We have received Him as our life once for all, but we also need to take Him daily as our life supply. A person who eats three good meals a day can work steadily, but a person without food for days is unable to live a normal human life.

As part of the Lord’s considerable speaking on the bread of life in John 6, He told us, “he who eats Me, he also shall live because of Me” (John 6:57). In John 6:35-47 the Lord tells us repeatedly to come to Him. We have already come to Him once for our eternal salvation, but we also need to come to Him daily in all our situations. Coming to the Lord daily, even hourly, is our eating of Him as the bread of life.

Today we come to the Lord as the bread of life, the tree of life, by coming both to the Bible and to Him as a person (John 5:39-40). The physical pages of the Bible alone do not give life but they do help us to come to the Lord in a solid way to receive Him as our life supply. This is the current reality of eating the tree of life in New Jerusalem.
