Authority and Life (1)

In Revelation 22:1 the apostle John tells us, “And he showed me a river of water of life, bright as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb in the middle of its street.” The river of life flows out of the throne of authority.

In Matthew 8:5-13 a centurion came to the Lord beseeching Him about a paralyzed servant. The centurion believed that the Lord’s word could heal the servant (v. 8). Then the centurion explained, “For I also am a man under authority…” (v. 9). The “also” indicates that the centurion recognized the Lord as one under heavenly authority and knew that being under authority was the basis for Jesus to speak the life-imparting word to heal the servant.

Authority and life are also seen in Luke 4. In verse 22 “All bore witness to Him and marveled at the words of grace proceeding out of His mouth.” In verse 32 “They were astounded at His teaching, because His word was with authority.” The Lord spoke with authority and with grace as the supply of life.

In John 17 the Lord Jesus prayed to His Father, “Glorify Your Son that the Son may glorify You; even as You have given Him authority over all flesh to give eternal life to all whom You have given Him” (v. 1-2). The Lord’s prayer tells us that He was given authority to impart life to us.

These three portions in the gospels match what we see in Revelation 22:1, a river of life flowing out of the throne. The coupling of authority and life is both now and for eternity.
