Lord, Show Me

In Revelation 21:9-11, “one of the seven angels…came and spoke with me, saying, Come here; I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb. And he carried me away in spirit onto a great and high mountain and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, having the glory of God.” Revelation 22 begins, “And he showed me a river of water of life.” John saw many details of New Jerusalem as a result of what the angel showed him from verse 21:9. Since John repeated “and he [the angel] showed me,” rather than just continuing with details, the seeing of the river of water of life must be most important.

In the entire revelation the angel “showed” two principal matters—the city and the river. The city is the ultimate building of God and the river is the ultimate manifestation of the life of God. The river is for the city; life is for building. The life that is Christ (John 14:6), that Christ came to impart to us (John 10:10) is for building and supplying God’s house. A physical building does not need a life supply, only maintenance. But a living organism, like our physical body, needs both life and the life supply. That is why we drink and eat multiple times per day. In New Jerusalem the river of water of life is for us to drink and the tree of life with its fruits is for us to eat.

The revelation of life for building is in many chapters of the Bible. One is 1 Corinthians 3:6-12 (more will be in upcoming posts). These verses first present Paul and Apollos as planters and waterers, fellow workers with God who causes the growth. Then verse 9 says, “you [the Corinthians] are God’s cultivated land, God’s building.” Planting, watering, growth, and cultivated land are all matters of life. This life is for God’s building, which is presented in the following verses.

Our growth in life is for God’s building. The angel showed John both building and life. However, the angel was not to be worshipped (Revelation 22:8-9) because the revelation comes from God not from the angel. We should not look for an angel but look to our Lord Jesus, the embodiment of God. We can ask Him, Lord, show me the holy city. Show me the river of water of life. Lord, show me life and building.
