Resurrection, Glorification

In Luke 24:26 the Lord asked two disciples, “Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and enter into His glory?” and in 24:46 “He said to them, Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise up from the dead on the third day.” Here the Lord equates resurrection with glorification. Peter does the same in Acts 3. In verse 13 he says, “the God of our fathers has glorified His Servant Jesus” and in verse 15 he tells the Jews, “the Author of life you killed, whom God has raised from the dead.”

When our Lord was resurrected He was glorified. Through a long process we too are being resurrected to be glorified with Him. Resurrection is life overcoming death (or swallowing up death, as in 2 Corinthians 5:4). The first stage of our resurrection was our regeneration. We were dead in our spirit but God enlivened us (Ephesians 2:1-5). Now, in the second stage, we are being transformed in our soul by the renewing of our mind (Romans 12:2). This comes from turning our hearts to the Lord and beholding the glory of the Lord, and it proceeds from glory to glory (2 Corinthians 3:18). Eventually, in the third stage, our mortal body will be glorified; that is, all the death in our body will be swallowed up by life, transfiguring our body “to be conformed to the body of His glory” (Philippians 3:21).

When the Lord returns in glory, His appearing will be unexpected and a shock to all the unbelievers. To us it will be expected even though we do not know the day or the hour, but it should not be a shock because it will be the culmination of what we have been experiencing our whole Christian life. The glory then will be a full taste of what we are foretasting now. Ultimately New Jerusalem will manifest this glory in the fullest way.
