New Jerusalem Has the Glory of God

Revelation 21:10-11a says, “And he carried me away in spirit onto a great and high mountain and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, having the glory of God.” The whole city shines with the glory of God because “the glory of God illumined it” (v. 23).

In 2 Timothy 2:10 Paul tells us, “Therefore I endure all things for the sake of the chosen ones, that they themselves also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.” We were chosen by God in eternity past. In time, God sent out many believers to proclaim Christ to all men. These heralds endured sufferings in order that we could “obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.”

Outside of Christ we have nothing. A hymn begins “All I have in Adam is but sin and death, I in Christ inherit life and righteousness.” We were in Adam but due to God’s mercy we have been transferred into Christ. In Him we have salvation; even He is our salvation (Luke 2:30). This salvation includes eternal glory.

The seed of glory was sown in us when we responded to “the gospel of the glory of Christ” (2 Corinthians 4:4). At that time God “shined in our hearts to illuminate the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” (v. 6). God has shined into our hearts that we may “shine as luminaries in the world” (Philippians 2:15) not with our own light but with Him.

In John 8:12 and 9:5 the Lord tells us, “I am the light of the world.” Yet in Matthew 5:14 He says, “You are the light of the world. It is impossible for a city situated upon a mountain to be hidden.” We are the light of the world when He is shining in us and through us. In this condition we are each a luminary and we are corporately a city upon a mountain. The consummation of this shining will be New Jerusalem shining with the glory of God.
