Clear as Crystal

Revelation 21:10-11  “And he…showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, having the glory of God. Her light was like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone, as clear as crystal.”

The jasper stone is “most precious” and it is also “as clear as crystal.” Natural jasper is opaque but this jasper is transparent. This shows that New Jerusalem is not natural but rather is in the new creation in resurrection.

In Revelation 22:1 the river of water of life flowing out of the throne is bright as crystal. The river is of the divine life and the reality of the river is the Spirit. (John 7:38-39 equates the flow of living water with the Spirit.) When we are under the throne, the Spirit flows through us and the life operates in us. This crystal flow transforms us and builds us together into the city to be the clear-as-crystal corporate jasper stone.

Transformation by the Spirit is seen in 2 Corinthians 3:16-18. Here our heart is turned to the Lord (v. 16)—a necessary first step every day, even every hour and every situation. Then the veil is taken away (v. 16), the Spirit frees us from the natural life (v. 17), and we behold the Lord with an unveiled face (v. 18). By our beholding, He shines into our hearts with His glory (v. 4:6) and we also reflect His glory. Through this process we are transformed into His image from glory to glory (v. 18). This is all by the Lord Spirit (v. 18). The end result of this transformation is the glorious New Jerusalem.
