Preparing the Bride by Washing (6)

New Jerusalem is “prepared as a bride adorned for her husband” (Revelation 21:2) by “the washing of the water in the word” (Ephesians 5:26). When we come both to the Lord, the living Word (the Logos), and to the Bible, the written word (logos), then in our fellowship with Him the printed words become living rhema to wash our inner being.

Posts 3 and 4 in this series show the need of a soft heart for the Lord’s word to be rhema to us. We also need to use our human spirit. John 6:63 says, “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words [rhema] which I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.” Similarly, 2 Corinthians 3:6b says,“the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.” The Spirit gives life and the words the Lord speaks to us are spirit in their nature.

To receive these words we need to use our human spirit. For this, we can pray with the written word. Ephesians 6:17-18a tell us to “receive…the sword of the Spirit, which Spirit is the word [rhema] of God, by means of all prayer and petition, praying at every time in spirit.” Lord, draw us to receive Your word by prayer in spirit.

The use of both our heart and our spirit in fellowship with the Lord is touched in a hymn by Witness Lee which begins,

God created us His vessels
His expression to achieve;
Thus He made a heart to love Him
And a spirit to receive.
