New Jerusalem is a City in Resurrection

New JerusalemRevelation 21:17 speaks about an angel measuring the wall of New Jerusalem. The measurement is “a hundred and forty-four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of an angel.”

Throughout the Bible angels and men are distinct species (e.g. Luke 12:8-9; 1 Cor. 4:9), even though angels sometimes appeared in the form of men. Yet, in Revelation 21 the measure of the wall of New Jerusalem is “of a man, that is, of an angel.”

Matthew 22:23-33 is the Lord’s answer to the Sadducees’ question about the continuation of human marriage in the next age. In verse 30 He said, “For in the resurrection they [men] neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.” In resurrection men are “like” angels. This illuminates Revelation 21:17: the measure of a man being the measure of an angel indicates that the measure is in resurrection. The wall of New Jerusalem is not natural but is in resurrection. Surely the whole city also is not natural but in resurrection.
