New Jerusalem is in Christ

In the time before His death and resurrection, our Lord said, “I will build My church” (Matthew 16:18). This building work began after His resurrection when He imparted Himself as eternal life into His followers. In the New Testament epistles, the Lord Jesus Christ is both the realm in which the building takes shape and the living stone for the building. Here are some verses about these two points.

In 1 Corinthians 3:11 Jesus Christ is the foundation for God’s building and in the following verses we do our building work upon Him as the foundation.

Ephesians 2:20-22 says, “Christ Jesus Himself being the cornerstone; in whom all the building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling place of God in spirit.” Here Christ Jesus is the cornerstone for joining two walls, representing Jews and Gentiles. He is also the realm in whom all the building is being fitted together and in whom we are being built together.

Ephesians 4:12 speaks about the building up of the Body of Christ. The Body is not outside of Christ but rather in and of Christ.

In Colossians 2:6-7 we have received Christ Jesus our Lord, we are walking in Him, and we are being built up in Him.

In 1 Peter 2:4-6, He is a living stone and a cornerstone chosen by God and precious to God for the building of a spiritual house.

Several of these verses come out of Isaiah 28:16 which prophesies that the Lord will be the tested and precious foundation stone and cornerstone.

Based on the pattern that the New Testament building is in Jesus Christ, surely New Jerusalem, the conclusion of all God’s building work, is also in Jesus Christ. New Jerusalem is not physical but is a living entity in our Lord Jesus Christ.

  1. So, if the New Jerusalem is in Jesus Christ, and we can walk in Him (Col. 2:6-7), then that must mean we can be in the New Jerusalem TODAY! We don’t have to wait until “the sweet by and by.”

    • Right; we don’t have to wait. But our participation today is the firstfruits (like Rom 8:23) and foretaste (like Heb 6:5) and pledge/downpayment (like 2 Cor 1:22) of New Jerusalem. There is more to come!
