God and the Lamb are the Temple of New Jerusalem

Revelation 21:9-10 says, “And one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues came and spoke with me, saying, Come here; I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb. And he carried me away in spirit onto a great and high mountain and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God.” Regarding this vision of the bride, the wife of the Lamb, the holy city, John said in verse 22, “And I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.”

In Revelation 3:12a the Lord promises, “He who overcomes, him I will make a pillar in the temple of My God, and he shall by no means go out anymore.” The overcoming believers will be pillars in the temple. This temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb, so the promise in verse 3:12 means that the overcoming believers are built into the Triune God. They “have a little power and have kept My word and have not denied My name” (verse 3:8). They do not have, or need, much power. But they have cooperated with the Lord to keep His word and to put aside other names. In response the Lord has made them pillars in Himself.

There is no physical temple in New Jerusalem nor are the pillars physical. Instead, the almighty Lord God and the redeeming Lamb themselves are the living temple and overcoming believers are the living pillars within this living temple. This is a strong word from the Bible that New Jerusalem is not physical. Rather, New Jerusalem is a living organism, a coinherence of the Triune God and all the redeemed people.
